Screen on the Green, the City of Hartsville’s free series of summertime movies, will launch this Saturday, May 9 with a showing of “Searching for Bobby Fischer,” sponsored by the educational group Learn and Win, in Burry Park, 131 Cargill Way.
The evening’s presentation, the 1993 film “Searching for Bobby Fischer,” tells the true story of Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc), who demonstrated a genius for the game of chess at an early age and was tutored by famous chess teacher Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kingsley) to reach the level of skill possessed by Bobby Fischer, considered to be the greatest chess player of all time. The movie rated PG for thematic elements.
The movie will be introduced by Learn and Win owner Michael Luppe, who will briefly speak about his passion for a game he has taught for more than a decade, and the value that chess has for its players. Luppe’s company, Learn and Win (www.learnandwin.net) offers tutoring and chess classes at local schools. Those interested may contact Luppe at mluppe@hotmail.com.
The showing begins at dusk, 8:20 p.m. or later. Moviegoers are welcome to bring chairs and blankets. In the event of rain, the showing will relocate to the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center at Byerly Park, found at 701 W. Washington St. in Hartsville.
