Motorists in downtown Hartsville will see the next phase in East College Avenue infrastructure improvements begin on the morning of Monday, Nov. 16, as the parking lot between Sophia’s Pizzeria and the Arcade Barbershop closes to allow repaving work to begin. The work will continue through at least the following six weeks, subject to weather conditions. All other City of Hartsville downtown parking lots will remain open during this time.The work comes as the next phase of the physical redevelopment of East College Avenue, one of the Multi-County Business Park (MCBP)-funded projects initiated by the City of Hartsville in the last year. In recent months, the parking lot to the south side of the street, located between the Dizzy Dancin dance studio and Vintage Craft Beer & Wine Boutique, received a fresh paving. Overgrown trees which had damaged the asphalt surface were removed and replaced, as were streetlights. The upcoming work will mirror these improvements across the street.
Subsequent work on East College Avenue will include the repaving of the street surface itself from Fourth to Fifth Street along with its sidewalks and landscaping, as well as the completion of a downtown pocket park on a portion of Mantissa Row.
Another nearby MCBP-funded project is moving forward nearby on the section of South Fourth Street between East Carolina Avenue and Railroad Avenue. This area is receiving new parking spaces to increase downtown Hartsville street parking as well as new streetlights, sidewalks and landscaping. Elsewhere in Hartsville, MCBP funds have been used for the creation of new traffic signals at the intersection of East Carolina Avenue and Second Street, as well as at South Fifth Street and Hartsville Crossing Boulevard.
