The school year has officially started, and Coker cobras have filled their dorm rooms and students at the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics have moved into their home away from home. Red Foxes have begun classes, and future red foxes have begun learning the fundamental basics. Our community possesses a plethora of educational institutions- both public and private- that are among the best. These students make Hartsville their home and a part of their heritage.
Last week, our community and City staff were fortunate enough to welcome our new Cobras with two events. Cobra Quest allowed for participating downtown businesses to have their windows decorated in school spirit by Coker students. Windows and sidewalks were filled with messages of “Go Cobras” and “Class of 2020”. Additionally, Destination Downtown took place for Coker College students as an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with our community’s various local restaurants and shops. We enjoyed seeing large groups of new Coker Cobras stop by the City’s table at this event.
Hartsville is not only a college town but also a knowledge town. With many students visiting downtown by walking from either Coker or the Governor’s school, the City has made efforts to bridge the gaps between these institutions and our downtown businesses. This has resulted in improvements to the city’s infrastructure and beautification of downtown. Most recently, College Avenue has had major improvements to the parking lots and street. This newly improved block will serve as an impressive corridor to Coker’s campus.
With the increased student population in Hartsville, there has been a push for new and different businesses to open their doors. Since 2014, more than 40 new businesses have opened in our downtown. This is a testament to the institutions housed in our community that allow for further development and further needs for the community. In addition, businesses have expanded their hours to accommodate these students.
Though some of these students’ time may be short in our community, Hartsville is still their home. They have a great connection to this city. No matter where you go, you can often find a connection with someone to Hartsville whether it’s the school you attended or the favorite hangout spot you enjoy. Hartsville is a home away from home and often can be a permanent home for some. Welcome to Hartsville, and welcome home.
