Coker College Band Tribute to Leonard Bernstein

FreeThe Coker College Band will be performing a Tribute to Leonard Bernstein on Monday, November 26, 2018, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center on the college’s Hartsville campus.
The college’s 65-member concert band will celebrate the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein on the centennial of his birth. The concert will feature a wide variety of his works from the symphonic stage, opera, ballet, Broadway and film, and will include performances by the Coker Dance Program.
Jennifer Dahlia, a Coker College Dance Education major will be performing Danzon from the ballet “Fancy Free”. The DNC 245 Musical Theatre Dance Styles class will be performing to Mambo from “West Side Story.” This class includes dance majors, a theatre major, a musical theatre major, a music major, and an accelerated high school student and is taught by Assistant Professor of dance and Coordinator of the Dance Education Program, Dr. Meredith Sims.
The Coker Band, directed by Kelly Jokisch, is composed of a combination of Coker College student and community musicians. Community members include professional area music educators, band directors, choir directors, ministers of music, Coker College faculty members along with students from the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, Hartsville High School and Florence District One. Concerts last 45-60 minutes without an intermission. The event is free and open to the public.
