Trisha Brown: In Plain Site
April 25, 2017 @ 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
FreeCoker College will host an outdoor performance, Trisha Brown: In Plain Site, by the Trisha Brown Dance Company, on Tuesday, April 25, at 6:30pm on the lawn of the Drengaelen House. The event is free and open to the public. There will be a question and answer session with the company immediately following the performance.
Trisha Brown Dance Company, established in 1970, is a post-modern dance company dedicated to the performance and preservation of the work of the company’s late founding artistic director and choreographer, Trisha Brown. The company has toured throughout the world performing, teaching and building relationships with audiences and artists alike.
Trisha Brown: In Plain Site marks a return to the company’s site-specific roots by adapting Brown’s broad range of works into a unique performance specific to the venue.
In an article for Dance magazine, Wendy Perron wrote Brown “said she felt sorry for spaces that weren’t center stage—the ceiling, walls, corners and wing space. Not to mention trees, lakes, and firehouses. She caused a revolution by …turning to the spaces that other dance-makers don’t.” A resourceful and expert innovator, Brown engaged leaders in music, theater and the visual arts as collaborators, including visual artists Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, and Elizabeth Murray, and musicians Laurie Anderson, John Cage, and Alvin Curran.
Brown retired as head of her company in 2013. Longtime company members Diane Madden and Carolyn Lucas were appointed as associate artistic directors with the directive that they present Brown’s dances in a variety of spaces, develop and expand the company’s educational initiatives, and treat the company’s archive as a living organism to be used to better understand Brown’s work and dance in general. Trisha Brown passed away on March 18, 2017.
In addition to the company’s performance, they will be in residence at Coker College April 23-25 teaching master classes. The special focus of this residency is on audience engagement, breaking down access barriers and providing a more intimate experience that includes families and people less familiar with modern dance.
The performance and residency is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The presentation of Trisha Brown: In Plain Site was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts; National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
