Hartsville Museum’s newest exhibit celebrates Black History Month

Beginning Feb. 1, the newest exhibit at the Hartsville Museum will celebrate Black History Month. The museum’s permanent collection of Black Heritage Stamps and other postal memorabilia will be on display in the W. Reaves McCall Gallery until Feb. 28.

The Black Heritage Stamps series first began in 1978, with the 1^st honoring abolitionist, Harriet Tubman. The 2018 Black Heritage Stamp, the 41^st issuance in the series, honors Lena Horne (1917 – 2010). Horne is honored for her achievements as a legendary performer and civil rights activist, using her personal elegance, charisma, and fame to become an important spokesperson for civil rights.

Stamps currently in the museum’s collection will be on display during the month of February during normal hours of operation. The Hartsville Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Admittance into the museum is free, however, donations are accepted and appreciated.
