How to Properly Prepare Storm Debris for Sanitation Pickup

We realize that after a storm, cleaning up debris is essential for our residents and businesses and want to work as quickly as possible to restore safety and order. To ensure a smooth and efficient sanitation pickup, please follow these guidelines for preparing storm debris:

  1. Separate Debris by Type: Sorting debris into different categories is crucial for proper disposal. Group debris into the following piles:
  • Bulk Yard Waste (Branches and Plants)
  • Loose Yard Waste (Leaves and Grass Clippings)
  • Household Trash (non-perishable items like food waste or everyday garbage)
  1. Cut Bulk Yard Waste: Trim branches and tree limbs to manageable sizes (usually 4-6 feet in length).
  2. Avoid Blocking Public Access: Place debris on the curb without blocking roads, sidewalks, or storm drains. Avoid placing debris near water meters, fire hydrants, mailboxes, or utility poles, as this can hinder collection and emergency services.
  3. Bag Smaller Debris: Collect leaves, grass clippings, small branches, and twigs in bags or brown roll-carts.
  4. Dispose of Hazardous Materials, Construction Material, and Electronics Separately at Darlington County Convenience Centers: Do not include hazardous waste (chemicals, paint, gasoline) in your regular debris piles. Contact your local waste management service for proper disposal instructions.
  5. Check Your Local Pickup Schedule: After major storms, sanitation services may operate on adjusted schedules. Stay informed by checking your local government or sanitation department’s website or social media for pickup dates and any special instructions.
  6. Be Patient: After significant storms, sanitation services may take longer to clear debris due to the volume. Following the guidelines above ensures that your debris is collected efficiently.

Proper preparation not only makes collection easier but also helps keep your community safe and clean after a storm.  If you have any questions please reach out to the Hartsville Public Services Department at 843.383.3006 (Main Line)
