The Butler Heritage Foundation is submitting a Brownfields Cleanup Grant Application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct cleanup activities at the former Butler High School located at 1103 South 6th Street, Hartsville, Darlington County, South Carolina. Brownfields are real property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The grant amount requested is a total of $200,000. If funded, the grant will be used for cleanup and abatement of asbestos containing materials (ACM) and community outreach activities. The cleanup work will be performed in accordance with one of the alternatives outlined in the Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA). The purpose of the ABCA is to evaluate various cleanup/management alternatives for contamination. This notice is to inform the community of the preparation of the grant application and the Draft ABCA. The Draft ABCA is available for review and public comment prior to the grant application submission deadline of October 28, 2020. Upon request, a draft of the application will be available for review beginning October 19, 2020 up until October 26, 2020. Community input is an integral part of brownfields cleanup and community-based organizations are encouraged to review the draft grant application and ABCA and provide comments. This matter will be discussed in a public meeting schedule for Monday, October 19, 2020, at 6:00 pm at the Butler Community Center located at the above address. Due to the current Coronavirus Pandemic, face coverings will be required and social distancing measures will be taken at the meeting. Interested citizens are invited to attend the meeting, provide comments and/or show support for the application.
