A new housing study project spearheaded by the South Hartsville Revitalization Association aims to take an important step forward in seeking funding resources for neighborhood revitalization efforts, as well as identifying priority need areas in the community. Volunteers will begin the study the week of July 13 and continue working through July 31.
The Association has taken on this effort, known as South Hartsville’s Existing Housing Conditions Study, after it came as a recommendation in the “South Hartsville Heritage Alive: A Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy” planning document. The plan emerged from an intensive community assessment of South Hartsville by a Community Planning Assistance Team of the American Planning Association, who visited Hartsville for the study after they were sought out by the City of Hartsville in 2014. The South Hartsville Revitalization Association, a group of neighborhood stakeholders, organizational leaders, elected officials and City staff, has since worked toward putting the planning document’s recommendations into action.
Volunteers from the neighborhood and the larger community will be conducting the surveys by vehicle and on foot, making visual inspections of the exteriors of all properties from the street. Local residents should be aware that volunteers will not be intruding on private property, and may be identified by name badges and orange safety vests. The City of Hartsville’s Planning Department developed the survey with input from the neighborhood association and led a training session on proper survey techniques.
